Diversity, composition and phenology of araneid orb-weavers (Araneae, Araneidae) associated with riparian forests in southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Rodrigues,Everton N. L.; Mendonça Jr.,Milton de S.; Rodrigues,Patrícia E. S.; Ott,Ricardo.
The Araneidae is a speciose family including web-spinning spiders that are very abundant in various terrestrial ecosystems. Several studies demonstrate that changes in vegetation surrounding rivers, streams and brooks affect the associated araneofauna. The aim of this research was to compare differences found in diversity (abundance and richness), composition and phenology of Araneidae spiders sampled in different habitats in four riparian forest catchments in southern Brazil. Samples were taken from riparian forests in four rivers of Rio Grande do Sul State: Piratini, Camaquã, Sinos and Maquiné rivers, each in a different hydrographic basin. Samples were taken twice seasonally on each basin during two years, sampling the araneofauna of the tree-shrub...

Diversity of galling arthropods and host plants in a subtropical forest of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Dalbem,Ricardo V.; Mendonça Jr.,Milton de S..
Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain diversity patterns of galling insects. However, there are contradictory evidences on the evolutionary and ecological factors responsible for the trends. Furthermore, questions such as arthropod seasonality, sampling sufficiency and sampling team experience have been almost ignored. This study records galling arthropod diversity while paying attention to these questions. Seasonal sampling of galling arthropods and host plants were conducted in a humid subtropical forest of southern Brazil. Four transects were sampled twice per season, with two persons searching the vegetation for galls during 1h30min. After 96h.persons of sampling, 130 gall morphotypes on 84 species of host plants were recorded. An analysis of...

Effects of egg age of Spartocera dentiventris (Berg) (Hemiptera: Coreidae) on parasitism by Gryon gallardoi (Brethes) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) Neotropical Entomology
Rocha,Luciane da; Kolberg,Roberta; Mendonça Jr.,Milton de S.; Redaelli,Luiza R..
To evaluate the effect of egg age of Spartocera dentiventris (Berg) on the parasitism by Gryon gallardoi (Brethes), groups of 12 eggs of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 12 days old were exposed to one female of G. gallardoi on a test tube, with the wasp observed for 2h subsequently. Later, the eggs were individualised and incubated (25 ± 1°C; 12h photoperiod) until adult emergence. To identify the preferred age, groups of 12 eggs of 1, 3, 5, 7 and 12 days of age were simultaneously exposed to a parasitoid female on an arena for 2h. These groups were also individualised and incubated until parasitism was confirmed. On all ages tested parasitism was at about 88.5 ± 2.64%, with a reduction in adult parasitoid emergence with age increasing (P < 0.01). The...

Oviposition behaviour of Gryon gallardoi (Hymenoptera, Scelionidae) on eggs of different ages of Spartocera dentiventris (Hemiptera, Coreidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Rocha,Luciane da; Redaelli,Luiza; Mendonça Jr.,Milton de S..
The oviposition behaviour of Gryon gallardoi (Brèthes, 1914) on eggs of Spartocera dentiventris Mendonça Jr. (Berg, 1884) of different ages (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 12 days) was investigated. Groups of 12 eggs of each age were exposed to single females of G. gallardoi, and the oviposition behaviour was recorded under a stereomicroscope for two hours. Ten replicates were used for each age. In order to identify the moment the parasitoid egg was released inside the host, 1-day old eggs of S. dentiventris were exposed to G. gallardoi females, and the oviposition was interrupted at intervals of 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 140 and 160s after ovipositor insertion had initiated. Five behavioural steps were recorded: drumming, ovipositor insertion, marking, walking...

Terrestrial isopod diversity in the subtropical neotropics: Itapuã State Park, southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Almerão,Maurício P.; Mendonça Jr.,Milton de S.; Quadros,Aline F.; Pedó,Ezequiel; Silva,Luiz G. R.; Araujo,Paula Beatriz.
We analysed species abundance and composition during one year of sampling at Itapuã State Park, a conservation unit in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Samples were collected monthly from May 2003 to April 2004 along a 4 km forest trail divided in three transects along the slopes of a small hill. Terrestrial isopods were hand searched by three people for 40 minutes at two sampling sites along each transect, summing 240 minutes of sampling effort per transect per month. Six species distributed in six families were found. The collector curve stabilised when half the samples were taken, demonstrating sampling sufficiency: analytical estimates did not predict more species to be found in the trail. Atlantoscia floridana (van Name, 1940) was...
